Momma Calling

There was a knock at the door tonight. A sneak peek of Thanksgiving arrived early this year, and in the form of my absolute favorite thing on earth...Green Bean Casserole! But only the way my mom makes it! Whatever she does ~ it's truly magical, a work of art, a culinary masterpiece!

I've tried to replicate it myself. Every time my stinkin' feeble fingers try, her nonchalant words echo in my head, "Honey, you just add some of this, and some of that, it's not that hard. It's no big deal. Just go like this..." I stand before you with a BIG, FAT, nuh uh, it doesn't work.

I would sacrifice all other food for the rest of my life if you promised me this yum daily...
no joke.

What part of the Thanksgiving meal are you looking forward to most?

  1. Oh yum!!! I love it too but we don't usually make it. Your moms looks yummy, so many crunchy onions on top!!!! I want her to make that next time we come by and then your chocolate pie for dessert!

  2. My daughter would be thrilled if I ever found a good recipe for green bean casserole....I haven't so far and I've given up. We're having green beans with toasted slivered almonds.

Favorite part of dinner....dressing, or is it stuffing? The Chew says it stuffing if it's in the turkey and dressing if it's in a casserole, so I guess ours is dressing.

    Happy Thanksgiving Hodder Family!

    Love,
    Dixie

  4. no joke - another Jen/ Ellen coincidence. Moments before logging on to read your blog, I just had finished speaking to a young woman at my office, and told her that I had to confess that my favorite TG food is the string bean casserole, with water chestnuts, mushroom soup and crunchy onion rings.

  5. I usually bring the green bean casserole to my aunt's house for thanksgiving. Here's my recipe:

    3 cans cut green beans
    1 can french-style green beans
2 cans cream of mushroom soup
1 can campbell's cheddar cheese soup (10 3/4 oz. can)
large can fried onions (6 oz.)
    1 tsp. worcestershire sauce

Preheat oven to 350. Drain green beans and pour into a 13 x 9 glass pan. Sprinkle with a little season salt or black pepper if you want.

In a mixing bowl mix together the cream of mushroom, cheddar soup, worcestershire, and about 1/3 of the can of fried onions (reserve the 2/3 for the top). Pour this over the green beans and stir until green beans are coated. Bake covered with foil for 25 minutes. Top with remaining onions and bake another 5 minutes uncovered.

I've tried several variations over the years and this is our favorite version. I don't do milk b/c we find that it comes out too runny for our preference, so that's why I sub with the cheese soup. And we prefer the worcerstershire sauce over the soy sauce that is in some versions. But that's just my family.

What I am looking forward to the most is my grandma's stuffed potatoes. She hollows out red potatoes and then stuffs them with garlic and onions. I'm also bringing pumpkin pie, sweet potato pie, (store bought ::hangs head in shame:: I don't have your skills so it's better for everyone this way) and a spray can of Reddie Whip. I'm looking forward to eating those also.

We're having a turducken but I honestly don't see what all the hype is about. For me it's just okay.

  7. I shouldn't have, but I couldn't resist your Double Chocolate Truffle Pie. I'm a chocolate nut. I made two for the crowd here. The topping will go on tomorrow. I licked the bowl for the truffle and the filling. Oh my. Will see how mine turns out, as I beat the filling as the recipe said and didn't take your advice. We may be eating Double Chocolate Truffle Pudding, with graham cracker topping.

    1. Hi Nancy! I hope it turned out well! You know what, you were right not to take my advise...I made two more of those pies for Thanksgiving and when I got to that part...I thought, "what the heck did I tell those people to do, that's impossible!!" I need to change it to mix it as little as possible and stir it the remainder of the way!

I hope you thought it was as GREAT as we did! We are making another order this Thursday and we always make 2 so I'm sure I will be digging in AGAIN : )
